Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, just like Litecoin or Ether, but with many unique properties that make it much more attractive to some people than others. Each bitcoin is created (or mined) using an encrypted code, which is a string of numbers and letters. The same equation used to create the code can “unlock” it (like a virtual key). Unlike traditional currencies, Bitcoin has no government or central bank behind it. Instead, users secure their money’s value by agreeing on its use through a network of computers called nodes. Once created, the first BTC was sent from Satoshi Nakamoto (guru of Bitcoin) to Hal Finney in 2009 for the equivalent of about $5 USD!
