Nike is one of the most popular brands in the world. When you think of Nike, what comes to mind? It's possible that your first thought is about their elite athletes and world-class teams, which includes former NBA MVP LeBron James and NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Their athletic gear can be found at major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target and others. It all started with an athlete. On a court, in a gym, on a basketball court. It was 1968, and Phil Knight was rolling through his first year as a running back for Portland State University. He had grown up poor and dreamed of moving to a bigger school, so when his football career ended, he went back to school to get an economics degree and made plans to play professional baseball before finally sticking with athletics.
